The cannon is a replica of a Wiard Civil War cannon that fired a 12-pound cannonball. The cannon actually is an extension of the Ancient Ozarks Natural History Museum at Top of the Rock, which features a collection of Civil War artifacts.
"It's more of a Bass Pro uniform," he says. The re-enactors do not wear a full military uniform, he says. "And I was amazed that they are still wearing the same shirts I gave them two years ago." "I was down there six months ago," he tells me. If he had had blue uniform shirts, he says, he would have given those to the re-enactors.
The first firing of the cannon occurred at the Top of the Rock's opening in 2014.Ī few weeks prior to that, John Sutton, who has been the chief ranger at Wilson's Creek for 26 years, was called upon to train the re-enactors how to fire the replica Civil War cannon without hurting anyone. Bass Pro had purchased the cannon from a re-enactment group.īut before Sutton headed down to Top of the Rock, he grabbed several gray uniform shirts he had. In practical terms, the real reason why they wear gray is is a matter of happenstance. In fact, some Union troops wore gray during the Battle of Wilson's Creek on Aug. Union soldiers might be wearing gray - and not blue - early in the war, but not by the end of the war, says Connie Langum, the historian at the national park site, which is southwest of Springfield. To pin down this down, I called the people who live and breathe this stuff over at Wilson's Creek National Battlefield. Historically, Wlezian says, Union soldiers occasionally wore gray uniforms.
The intent of Bass Pro owner Johnny Morris was to have the re-enactors represent Civil War soldiers - not necessarily Confederate or Union, says Jack Wlezien, director of communications for Bass Pro.
